ABATE of the Garden State says "Get Lost!" to Lautenberg!
Release Number 0070

Motorcycling Endurance Riders
Bikers Rights, Motorcyclists Issues, Long Distance Motorcycle Riding

ABATE Call to Action

URGENT, don't pass up this rare opportunity!

Senator Frank Lautenberg has consistently shown that he is not friendly to biker issues. Do you want to see another 6 years of him? We now have a viable candidate running against him in the Democratic Primary. Rob Andrews has been friendly to motorcyclist's concerns [*** see his statement in the Yingling email below ***] and even was a sponsor of the HIPAA bill to remove the loophole that under certain conditions allows insurance companies to deny insurance coverage to motorcyclists. ABATE has worked with Rob Andrews in the past on the HIPAA Bill and hopefully will continue to do so in the future.

Here is our game plan:

We will flood the voting booths in the Democratic PRIMARY Election with motorcyclists, their friends, and families who will vote for Rob Andrews. These primary elections historically have a very low turnout and there are over 150,000 registered motorcyclists in New Jersey. If we could get 25,000 of them to vote for Rob Andrews, we could easily swing the election and remove Frank Lautenberg from the Senate Democratic ticket in the General Election. This would leave Andrews running against the Republican nominee in the General Election. [*** Either way, Lautenberg is out! ***] We may never have a better opportunity to remove Frank Lautenberg!

WE must have a record turn out at this June 3 Primary.

WE the Biker Vote must turn out in record numbers to defeat Senator Lautenberg and get Rob Andrews elected. To do this you must be a registered Democrat. If you are already a registered Democrat and are registered to vote, you only need to show up and vote in the June 3rd primary. If you are not a registered Democrat, the deadline for changing your affiliation for the Primary Election is fast approaching. If you choose do it by mail, the deadline is Monday April 14.

In the General Election, your party affiliation does not preclude you from voting for whichever candidate you decide to vote for. In the General Election you may vote for any candidate of any party you wish. Should you wish to change your affiliation at any time after the primary, you can do this very easily by mail.

If you register in person with your county board of elections you have until Wednesday May 14. Most counties have several places to register to vote and change your party affiliation. Go to your county phone book or web-site to find out more. Unless you have lived in the dark ages you should know Lautenberg's unfriendly stances on biker rights.

There is a saying, strike when the iron is hot. Well, the -- IRON -- IS -- HOT. Remember, all the hours of griping at the bar, complaining at your friend's house, and other places will not be as effective as acting NOW! Make your voice heard at the June 3, 2008 Primary.

To maximize the impact of this campaign, please pass this on to your fellow riders, non-riding friends, neighbors, and family members. Remember that the window to declare party affiliation is closing fast. Do it today!

Dear Rudy and Tom,

My name is Tyler and I work for Rob. As requested I am sending both a copy of Rob's policy towards motorcycling and an endorsement that you may use. There is one thing I should bring to your attention:

1) Rob is not a co-sponsor of the bill that would close the loophole in HIPAA. The bill is in the HELP subcomittee which he chairs. I have advised our staff about this and they will bring it to his attention.

Thanks, and if you need anything please let me know.

Regards,

Tyler

1)

Since taking office as a member of Congress from New Jersey's 1st Congressional District, I have been an advocate for the Garden State's 130,000 motorcyclists. Motorcycling is synonymous with freedom, and I fully support the effort to preserve the rights of the motorcycle community by opposing unnecessary federal laws that seek to constrain the liberty of riders.

I am proud to have stood with my good friends of the motorcycle community on various issues that impact an important aspect of their lives. As a member of Congress I have worked with ABATE to remove a loophole in the HIPAA bill that, under certain conditions, would allow insurance companies to deny insurance coverage to motorcyclists. I also remain an advocate of a rider's choice to wear a helmet. I am opposed to any federal mandate that would take away the ability of a rider to make this crucial and personal decision. Finally, I fully support and encourage our government leaders to provide additional programs dedicated to motorcycle awareness and training for drivers. We all have a responsibility to share our roads and ensure that our motorcyclists have a safe environment to enjoy their recreational activity.

Motorcycling remains an important part of our culture. Its emphasis on personal liberty, freedom and choice are uniquely American. I am remain dedicated to working with the members of its community to preserve this role and hope to see you all in the years ahead.

2)

Today, ABATE of the Garden State is pleased to announce its endorsement of Congressman Rob Andrews for United States Senate.

As a member of the House of Representatives from New Jersey's First Congressional District, Rob Andrews has consistently stood up to protect the rights of motorcyclists. Specifically, he has demonstrated his support for the following issues which affect you, the motorcyclist:

As a member of Congress he has worked with ABATE to remove a loophole in the HIPAA bill that, under certain conditions, would allow insurance companies to deny insurance coverage to motorcyclists. He remains an advocate of a rider's choice to wear a helmet demonstrated by his opposition to any federal mandate that would take away the ability of a rider to make this crucial and personal decision. Finally, he fully supports and encourages our government leaders to provide additional programs dedicated to motorcycle awareness and training for drivers.

This primary provides an opportunity for the 150,000 registered motorcyclists throughout New Jersey to make their voices heard and send to the Senate a biker-friendly candidate who will champion our cause.

I hope you will join Abate of the Garden State in supporting the Rob as he has supported us.

"The battle for bikers' rights is not about patches, parties or poker runs. We fight to protect the freedom and promote the interests of American motorcyclists ... to defend our right to choose our own modes of transportation, attire and lifestyle ... to deter and defy discrimination against us ... and to vanquish those who violate our rights or right-of-way. And in the end, it will not matter to us whether we won or lost. But it will matter to us greatly that we fought."--Bruce Arnold
